Ministry Team at United Memorial Church

Rev. Catherine MacDonald

Catherine heard God's call from a very early age, but like many women, didn't see ministry as an option for her. But God is persistent! After careers in retail management and financial planning, she finally said 'Yes' to God and began studies at the Atlantic School of Theology. She was ordained at the Annual Meeting of Maritime Conference in 2004 and settled in Claremont Ontario, where she spent four years before accepting the call to come minister with us.

One of her passions is connecting the world of scripture with the world in which we live and having scripture speak to our lives today. This passion stirs her to share the Good News of the Christian Gospel in a variety of ways, from sermons to drama, monologues as a character from Scripture, and dialogues on particular issues.

She is enjoying getting to know the folks from United Memorial as well as the opportunity to meet with colleagues and community leaders in the North End. She will be delighted to hear from you if you would like a visit or phone conversation!

Nancy Nelson
Administrator

Nancy Nelson came on board as our office administrator in November 2006. She can be reached at United Memorial weekday mornings Monday through Thursday from 9-12, where she greets visitors, answers phone and email inquiries and manages the day-to-day operations of the church office.

Music Director

Glenn Keefe – Organist/Choir Director

“Music is the art of the prophets, it is the only art that can calm and sooth the agitations of the soul.  It is a gift given by God.”
M. Luther

Glenn’s early musical training was from his mother and an old pump organ that she bought when she was growing up. She was the first of his teachers, as a student at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Glenn started organ lessons with Patricia Young in 1995, under whose training Glenn received awards for hymn playing and organ performance.  Glenn’s musical interests are not only of piano and organ; he has been involved with community choirs, musical theater, and has had a private piano teaching studio.

Glenn started playing in churches at the age of 11 years, this journey has brought him to many places and congregations. Glenn is glad to be a part of United Memorial United Church Halifax, and looks forward to the journey ahead. Christmas 2009 will mark Glenn’s 28th year as a church organist and choir director.

Glenn is currently working as a Dental Technician with the Canadian Armed Forces at CFB Halifax, Stadacona.  He is currently working on his Undergraduate Degree in Sociology from Memorial University of Newfoundland.  Glenn’s long term goal is to become a Military Chaplain for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Michelle Armstrong
Student Minister

Michelle Armstrong is our student minister from the Atlantic School of Theology. She is excited to be journeying with us as part of her education. She is looking forward to getting to know our congregation and developing her skills. She will be involved with the congregation over the next year and half.

Michelle is new to Halifax, originally from Calgary Alberta she moved here in August to pursue her Master of Divinity. In Calgary she was involved in a variety of ministry experiences including youth ministry, Sunday school teaching, she has worked with children with special needs, church based social justice projects and was part of an intentional interim-ministry transition team.

Michelle's call came as a surprise; she entered into her undergraduate degree convinced that she was heading towards child and family therapy. While studying she was approached by the university chaplain to consider taking on a youth ministry position and as she began to work in the church, her passion and sense of being called to a vocation of ministry increased.
